Termites cause more damage to Australian homes each year than fire and flood yet you have no insurance against them. But right behind them are the bad termite technicians who because of their lack of understanding on how to do the job correctly and/or just plain rip off merchants will take your money and allow the termites to continue destroying your home. If you get 3 quotes you will get 3 different opinions and be confused. Please read this in full as it may save you Thousands of dollars maybe even your house. In this page I will tell all about the Pest Management industry warts and all. I will attempt to educate you in what you need to understand to make the right choice for your home.

Here are the questions you need to ask of your Pest Manager to ensure he is honest and trustworthy. If the answer to any of the following questions is no, don’t deal with them they are dodgy.

Q1. Are you insured and will you provide me a copy of your certificate of currency? (If they are not insured then you will not have any comeback if anything goes wrong. If you suffer severe damage to your home you will be stuck with the cost of repairs).

Q2. Have you a QBSA license and a Qld Health License that is endorsed for Timber Pests. Can I please see them? (If they have not got either of these their insurance is null and void).

Q3. Will you be carrying out a full inspection of my property and supply me with an inspection report with my quotation. (Their insurance is conditional on full compliance with Australian Standard 3660.2-2000. Section 4 of this standard clearly states that a written quotation must be supplied in addition to the written inspection report. Also if they do not carry out an inspection they will not be able to access your problem in full and this is where most treatments fail. Also if you cannot trust someone to do the quote properly, how are you going to trust them to do anything else properly).

Q4. If you carry out a chemical barrier/treated zone to my house will you be cutting and removing the cement that abuts my home. (The drill and inject method does not comply with Section 6.4.2, Appendix E.3 and Appendix E4.4 of the Australian Standards 3660.2-2000 and thus will void any insurance unless clearly stating this as an exclusion in the quote. Also this method cannot impede concealed termite ingress into your home and is almost useless).

Q5 If you are going to install a baiting system around my house will your quotation include an exclusion that states the system cannot prevent termite entry into my home. (Section 6.5 of the Australian Standard 3660.2-2000 states baiting systems cannot impede concealed entry into a building and this is required to be stated as exclusion in any quote. Should the termite management firm not do this their insurance will be voided).

Q6 You are offering me a timber replacement insurance/warranty I trust you receive no kickbacks in any way for this. (We can offer you the PestWise Timber Pest Insurance of which we receive no commissions or adverting commissions for. It is solely for your benefit not ours).

If you ask these questions you will quickly work out who is dodgy and who you can trust. Remember the answer to all these questions needs to be YES, no exceptions.

Now the bad news, if you contacted a hundred different companies and asked these questions you would be extremely lucky to find just one that would answer every question with a yes. Why you ask?

Here is the warts and all part of my industry. The industry is totally self regulated. The industry has no real training and qualifications are very easy to get. You can get these qualifications in as little as a month. The industry is grossly over serviced rendering prices at ridiculous levels most often well below the cost of doing a job properly. This ensures most and I mean most in the industry are cutting corners.

I will gladly sit down with you and explain the cost to me of doing your job and even tell you how much Profit I will make and yes to survive in business you must make a profit. It would be naïve to think a company can do work at cost or near cost and survive to honour any warranty, it just cannot happen.

I have been in the Pest Industry since 1983 and have witnessed huge changes mostly for the better. However the standard of workmanship is at an all time low. Most are either blatant rip off merchants or just have no idea of what they are doing. This means you the consumer are being ripped off by cheap work that in most cases is below the cost of doing the job properly. Don’t get conned. Get the job done right, get it done once, and get it done by a professional.
