Most homes that are attacked by termites are brick veneer homes on a concrete slab. Termites gain entrance through pipe penetrations and any deficiency in the mortar. Myth. My house is built from hardwood termite's wont attack it. Fact. Termite's natural food is gum tree that is a hardwood. While there are a lot of hardwoods with natural resistance to termites not all hardwood is resistant. Also any resistance is normally found in old grow timbers and may not apply to new grow timber. Myth. My house was treated with the old chemicals so termites can't attack it. Fact. A large number of houses treated with the old chemicals were not done properly and while these chemicals were very forgiving they are not bullet proof. Have your house inspected at least once a year. Be vigilant. Myth. I have had a chemical barrier put around my house. The company drilled holes in the external concrete and pumped chemical through the holes so my house is right. Fact. Drilling and injecting of external concrete does not comply with the Australian Standards and is incapable of impeding concealed termite ingress into your home. You should have had the concrete cut and removed to allow a full trench to be dug all the way around your home. This is the only way a continuous barrier can be installed. Myth. I have had a baiting system put around my home I now have a barrier that will keep termites out of my house. Fact. Plastic or wood stations placed around your house are not a barrier and cannot prevent termites gaining access to your house. Beware of claims that this will stop termites or a substance will be added to the stations that will intercept termites. All these systems rely on the termite locating the station through a random act of foraging. Any other claim is an out and out lie. Baiting systems are very good at what they do, that is eliminating the colony. They do not stop termites entering your home. Myth. My pest controller has got insurance, if the treatment goes wrong he will fix the problem. Fact. All pest management firms should have insurance, but this insurance they tell you about is professional indemnity insurance. To claim against it you have to sue the firm, often this will cost you more than the claim. There are a few company's offering a timber replacement warranty or insurance.
